H3C has introduced SmartMC, an embedded network management tool with a web-based GUI, to simplify operations and facilitate centralized management at no additional cost.
Network expansion requires an increase in the number of access devices at their edges. Managing and maintaining such access devices can be very complex and time-consuming. The Smart Management Center (SmartMC) provides a platform that integrates multiple management and maintenance functions for distributed network devices at network edges, enabling simplified bulk device management. In a SmartMC network, only one device acts as a "commander," and the remaining devices act as members.
H3C SmartMC offers the following features:
• Smart management. Includes changing device roles, collecting network topology information, configuring the outbound interface, and automatic Ethernet link aggregation.
• Smart operation and maintenance. It includes member update, bulk configuration file backup, VLAN deployment, smart port identification, resource monitoring, and failed device replacement.
• Management visibility. Includes network topology management, adding members, and displaying a list of devices and their status.
• Smart servicing. Includes creating and activating users.
The SmartMC network contains the following elements:
• Commander - Also known as the Topology Master (TM), which manages all elements of the SmartMC network.
• Member - Also known as Topology Client (TC), which is managed by the Commander.
• File Server - Stores startup software images and configuration files for the commander and members. Members obtain the required files from the server according to the commands given by the commander. The file server can be an independent server or combined with the commander or member. It is recommended to deploy an independent file server to reduce the workload on the commander or member.
The initial setup of the network connection from all devices to the commander can be established both automatically and manually. After that, a NETCONF session is established and the necessary configuration is sent to each device. If necessary, each device can be managed from the outside.
Among the features is the ability to easily configure wireless networks directly from the SmartMC console for models that have a built-in controller. For finer tuning, redirection to the controller interface will be performed.
For video surveillance networks, there is a built-in functionality for monitoring the status of cameras. You just need to add their MAC addresses, and all cameras will be displayed on the topology.
For telephony users, it is possible to configure SIP-based service quality analysis monitoring directly from the panel, which allows the monitoring of audio and video traffic on the network.
H3C SmartMC offers excellent centralized management and monitoring functionality for small networks that do not require additional investments. It’s built into many Layer3 switches and routers.
